General Information

TO ALL HOBARTIANS

Well Anzac Day (Monday, April 25th) is not far off again. The routine for "Hobart Assoc. S.A. Division is very similar to last year with just a few minor changes. I'll rewrite The Orders of the Day, below, for the benefit of any new Members and as a reminder to some of us older Regular Members.

The main Dawn Service in Adelaide will be held at the War memorial in North Terrace at 0600. This year Adelaide Sub Sec. Club Rooms will not be open for breakfast after this Dawn Service. However, these Club Rooms will be open after the Anzac Day March until approx. 1600 OR as the demand requires. Port Adelaide Sub Section will also conduct their usual short March and Memorial Dawn Service commencing at 0615 followed by breakfast at their Club Rooms.

For the Main ANZAC DAY MARCH, Ex " Hobart " Members (Cruiser and DDG39) are urged to attend and assemble 10 abreast on the North Side of North Tce. behind the HOBART Banner, just East of‑the War Memorial, before 0915, ready to move off at 0930. (As usual, Warrego Members are invited to 'join our group and also attend our Lunch).

Shipmates Jack Thompson will be leading our Hobart Contingent, Hugh Baddams will be our Unit Marshall and Colin Churchett will be our front line marker on the right for saluting purposes. (Laurie Button has sadly withdrawn as our marker after many years of reliably doing so.)

SALUTES will be given at the National War memorial (North Terrace), the South African War Memorial (corner of North Terrace and King William Road ) and the Official Dais Saluting Base (at the North East corner of The Parade Grounds). DISPERSAL will be at The.Naval memorial Gardens adjacent to Sir Edwin Smith Avenue , where a sprig of Rosemary may be placed, as a tribute, on our Hobart Memorial Plaque.

The usual Anzac Memorial Service will be held at Pennington Gardens after the March,

TRANSPORT during 'the March (Landrovers and Red Cross Cars) will be available about 100 metres . behind our Unit in North Terrace. To use this, you must notify Eddie Weeden Ph.8381 4024 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

TOILET facilities will be available before the March at the South end of Kintore Ave. , and after the March at the rear of the University Oval and at the South Eastern corner of Pennington Gardens , OR just go before you leave home!!!

NEXT OF KIN PARTICIPATION. R.S.L. policy, existing for many years, Prefers

the next of kin (to be at least 13 years old) will only march with Group

12, i.e. the "Legacy and Next of Kin Unit" near the end of the March. They

can wear the Service Medals of their deceased relative on the right breast

and they must always be dressed in a manner appropriate to a March of this

nature

BUCK'S REUNION (i.e. men only) will be held at the Duke of York Hotel, 82 Currie Street , commencing after the March and Service. Meet at the hotel ground floor bar (which opens at 1100) where the ,Main Brace will be Spliced for each of us as we arrive and up to 1230. Lunch will then commence upstairs at 1230 sharp. Friends and Warrego Members are welcome to join us.For catering purposes, please advise me on 8443 9086 ASAP if you and/or a mate /mates will be attending‑ Main courses range from $7.00 a serve at your individual cost. Drinks ‑ jugs, etc. ‑ will be pooled and the cost evenly spread amongst those present.

LADIES LUNCHEON. Cruiser, DDG39, Warrego wives and friends are invited to attend The London Tavern, 175 North Terrace (opposite the War Memorial) for drinks ,. after the March and Lunch to commence after the memorial Service. For catering purposes, please advise Carolyn Thompson Ph.8260 6181 immediately if you wish to attend.

AFTER THE ABOVE LUNCHES, it is your choice to all meet back at Naval House 13 Hutt Street, Adelaide, to retrieve your spouses OR who ever and have"one for the road" if you can still find it.

THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA MEMORIAL. There will be a Commemorative Service organised by the Aust/American Assoc. (A.A.A.) on Sunday, May lst, 2005 at 1000 in the City.Botanical Gardens ‑ enter from North Terrace, then lst pathway to the right. ‑ Becaulse"'HOBART" and "AUSTRALIA" were the only Australian.ships involved in the Coral Sea Battle and because the Coral Sea Battle was the last allied stand before our country Australia, could have been invaded by the Japanese, it is most fitting that our Ex "HOBART" and "AUSTRALIA" Members should be well represented at this Service. We will be laying a wreath. The RAN Band will be in attendance. The Service will be followed by morning tea in the Rotunda, provided by the A.A.A. However, due to changed arrangements for this year only THE NAVY WEEK NAVAL MEMORIAL GARDEN SERVICE will be held at 1130 on the same day as the above CORAL SEA MEMORIAL SERVICE. ‑So‑therefore the time factor on this day will not allow the Adelaide Sub Section, and more especially the HMAS"HOBART" and " AUSTRALIA " Associations to cordially invite the Members of the A.A.A. back to the A.S.S. Clubrooms for the usual friendly liquid refreshments and further nibbles. We apologise to the A.A.A. Members for this non event.

However, instead, Members of the A.A.A. are invited to join the R.A.N. and Naval Assoc. of Aust. to the Naval Memorial Garden Service to be held at Navy Memorial Gardens on Sir Edwin Smith Avenue, North Adelaide at 1130 to witness the laying of Memorial Wreaths by individual H.M.A. Ships' Associations (including "Hobart" and "Australia" )_ on Ships Plaques in the Memorial Gardens. After this Service, all in attendance (including Members of A.A.A., Hobart and Australia Associations) are invited back to the Adelaide Sub Section Club Rooms at 13 Hutt Street , Adelaide , for a lunch and refreshments which will be then made available.

begins at midday , at your cost. (Special Menu items are included.) We ask

that you donate the raffle prizes to boost our Assoc. Funds. (Please note

that our Association does not pay Yearly Subscriptions ‑ It's better fun

doing it this way.)   We always have a free gimmick going ‑ plenty of

free Easter Eggs last time ‑ I'm still working on our current gimmick. It

better be good because the May Lunch this time celebrates our 10th Anni

versary of Lunches at. The Hilton Hotel. Take some time off from "What

Ever" and bring your friends along to this next special Luncheon to enjoy

the hospitality of Hobart Members and their friends. From records passed

on to me, the S.A. Division of the Hobart Association is one of the oldest

( if not the oldest) Ships Association formed in Australia after W.W.11.

The formation was suggested by Phil Buring and Shiner Jack Wright and a

couple of other mates over a few beers at a pub in 1946. Yes, you are. right ,

next year is our 60th Anniversary of the formation of our Hobart Assoc. in

S.A. ‑ (The month is not recorded.) ‑‑‑butI suggest we make it May, (2006)

to blend in with The Hilton Hotel Anniversary.

SICKNESS.        Unfortunately, this list is still growing, and we absolutely

know it's not through"bad living habits" or "playing up"? However, please

return to good health soon and let us hope you are well enough to front

up on Anzac Day.

GENERAL NOTES

(1)         In the Queensland Division, the President, Jim Orr, after many long

hard working years, has decided to take a well earned rest and has

been replaced by Doug Marsen as the new President. Of course the

Secretary, Alan Whyte, is still battling on again for another year

             or so.

(2)         If you change your address and don't notify me, you will not get

our next Newsletter and it will have cost your Assoc. time, money

and effort and more importantly we have lost a valuable Member. On

the other hand, if for some reason you don't wish to receive our

future Newsletters, please oblige by advising me by phone (8443 9086).

NOTE There were four letters returned to me last time marked   "Not

             at this address".

(3)         1 will have a few spare "HOBART ASSOC." Car Stickers with me on Anzac

             Day. $2 each.

(4)         The Naval Assoc. Cadet Award Fund set up in S.A. many years ago by

the S.A.Ships Assocs.; has asked our Assoc. to make a further dona

tion (usually about $50 a year) to help send‑the Current *S.A. "Naval

Cadet of the Year" to go to sea on a trip on the M.V. "One and All".

If you, as a Member, object to us making a $50 donation this year,

please advise me before or on Anzac Day. (At this stage, we can

             afford it.)

LIGHTER NOTES. With winter coming on, I'll repeat the old sailors remedy for colds and flu:‑ Rum drinks and lemon placed on the bedside table,‑ ' Drink rum until you can see three lemons. If not cured in 24 hours, repeat dose.

And beware you Cruiser Sailors. Have you heard about the woman who was looking for a younger man because she didn't like to feel old age creeping up on her.

And for the DDG Sailor who got up one morning and decided it looked so nice out, he would leave it out.

And then there are those of us oldies who are so old that when we chase our loved ones around the bedroom, we can't remember why.

While the statistics for the youngies show that 90% of all people are caused by accidents.

The Qu. Division N'.L. advised that a priest and a minister travelling in a plane sat next to each other. The hostess asked the priest if he would like a drink, "Scotch and Soda please", he replied. "And you, Sir", she asked the minister. "No thank you" he said, "I'd rather commit adultery than drink alcohol". The priest turned to the hostess and said "May I change my order? I didn't know I had a choice".

Regards,
